Appomattox July 2, Morgantown July 3, State College July 4th

Leaving Mick & Susie behind I left for Appomattox. But after three days house guests & fish begin to smell. So, with plenty of golf left to be played, and many memories shared, waving goodbye, I left. Stopping at a fresh fish market I bought pieces of grouper and swordfish, and a bag of garden-fresh Lima beans. It was an easy drive to Appomattox, While the grounds were open and available, the buildings were all closed. Covid, no doubt.

Most of all I would like to have explored the Court House

The drive North to Oakland, MD was the most difficult of the entire journey: it was a long slow drive up the southern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, hardly noticeable, but reaching the summit after dark, it was a series of very steep switchbacks for a long hour before I reached Oakland MD. I parked in the hospital lot and fell asleep instantly. Up in the morning I headed west.

My destination was Morgantown WV the site of  the University of West Virginia, and the home of Dr. Keith Inskeep* and his wife Ansusan. Keith called us penpals as we both found a kindred spirit in one another. He was Professor of Animal Reproduction at the University. My squadron mate Steve Conrad was one of his students perhaps 53-4 years ago. Today both are farmers living some 40 miles away. What a coincidence!

Keith and Ansusan invited me to lunch. We had a very fine chat together.  I discovered Keith on one of Steve’s polemic emails to which I responded “check your facts, Steve; they are out there, perhaps on Snopes”. Soon thereafter I came upon an email on the same thread. It was an “attaboy” from Keith Inskeep. That was in May of 2020.  We carried on a conversation by email for more than a year.

* sadly I learned tonight 10/9/21 that Keith  passed on August 5, 2021, a few days after we met at their home.

I ventured on, anxious to get to Camp in Maine. After an extra-long drive I stopped, exhausted, in State College, PA and made the costly mistake of putting gas and not diesel in the tank. I was towed off to the Benz dealer. They had time and experience to take me for a short wait. I left their lot $700 lighter. Doh!!
